The city was founded in the 6th c.BC as Aulon, one of three Greek colonies on the Illyrian coast, meaning "channel, glen". From here, you can cross to Italy and get other ferries further to Greece, Croatia and beyond. The alternative international ferry ports are in Durres and Saranda.
