Rethymnon port facilities

Rethymnon port is located directly in the capital town of the island. You can find covered seating areas and there are many cafes and restaurants nearby.

There are parking facilities near the port.

Getting to and from the port

By car

The port is well connected and signposted and is located in the centre of town.

By Taxi

You will normally find taxis parked near to the port when ferries arrive and depart but because it's a small port they may not be there all the time. Don't rely on finding a taxi easily in July and August.

By Bus

The main bus terminal is about a 20-minutes walk from the port. You'll find it on Igoumenou Gavriil 1.

On Foot

As the port is located in the main town, it’s very easy to reach on foot.

Flights to Rethymnon Crete has two major airports: Heraklion Airport "N. Kazantzakis" (HER) and Chania Airport "Ioannis Daskalogiannis" (CHQ). From Chania airport, Rethymnon is about 72km away (1 hour and 10 minutes by car) and from Heraklion airport about 80km (also 1 hour and 10 minutes by car). Public busses are available for both routes. Ferries to Rethymnon However, if you are travelling to Rethymnon from the Cyclades taking the ferry is far easier. A fast ferry is almost as quick as a flight in travel time and when you consider there are no queues or check-in involved, in total most people save time. You can take your bike with you for free to or from Rethymnon, if you travel on large ships such as those from the companies Sea Speed Ferries and others. However, on ships without a garage, bicycles are normally not allowed inside. You'll see if the ship has a garage when making your reservation. Rethymnon can be busy in the summer so it is a good idea to tell a member of the port staff that you have a bike in case you might need extra assistance.

The ferry port of Rethymno is located in the centre of the city so you will find plenty of travel agencies around. Go to a central agency and you won't pay to have your ticket printed. There will be a sign outside the door or you'll be referred there by the agency. If you go to a non-central agency may have to pay a small fee to get your ticket - normally a couple of Euros.

You can first travel to Chania from Athens by using the port of Piraeus, this is the main port serving Athens and then travel within Crete to Rethymnon.

  • By car: Please arrive at least two hours before you travel and in July and August allow for traffic jams on your journey.
