Located in the North West of Sardinia, Italy, Porto Torres is the second largest port on the island for passengers and goods. It is considered a multipurpose harbour. The civic port is divided into Ponente piers, Dogana Segni quay and Alti Fondali quay, intended for passenger ferries, freight ships and pleasure crafts. The port is a small port and is generally moderately busy but is busiest in the summer.

Island hopping around  Porto Torres

ARST company does up to 29 daily trips between Porto Torres and Sassari (a 30-minute journey). From Sassari it is then possible to continue towards Olbia, Oristano, Cagliari and the other major centres of Sardinia.

The blue and red buses also run to Alghero-Fertilia airport (40 minutes), Alghero (1 hour) and Stintino (40 minutes). Digitur also operates on the Porto Torres-Sassari line, while Sun Lines ensures a scheduled service from June to September to Castelsardo (about 45 minutes) and Olbia (3 hours 15 minutes).

From Porto Torres you can get a ferry (€15 return ticket) and reach the island of Asinara, once known for the maximum security prison and today a great National Park.

The port of Porto Torres is divided into the Civic and the Industrial Port. The Maritime Station with a bar, ticket offices and services, is located close to the civic port and is served by the free port shuttle service.

At ASI pier there are services and ticket offices for the companies that operate permanently in the port. An information service managed by the Municipality is provided inside the maritime station.

Getting to and from the port

By car

The port is connected to the East via the E25, SS729 and SS597 autostrada with the town of Olbia (124 km), to the South East via the E25 with the city of Cagliari (234 km) and to the South West via the E25 with the city of Oristano (143 km).

By Taxi

The taxis stop in Piazza XX Settembre and Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. The contact details for taxi reservations are in the Useful Numbers section below.

By Bus

There is a shuttle bus service within the port area. This free service is reserved for passengers who have to embark or disembark from ferries. The service connects the centre of Porto Torres, the ticket offices, the maritime station and the railway station of “Porto Torres Marittima” to the docking points for ferries. The shuttle service starts every day about an hour before the departure of each ferry, and until the arriving passengers have completely disembarked.

By Train

The port is also served by rail transport. The station, Porto Torres Marittima, is located in Ponte Romano. There are three tracks which both the Regional and Fast trains use, all run by Trenitalia and going every twenty minutes to Sassari, Cagliari and Olbia.

On Foot

Porto Torres is a small and easily accessible town that is easy to get around. It is small enough to be explored comfortably on foot or by bike.
