The port of Palermo is located in the city center, so just follow the signs from every direction in the center until you reach Via Emerico Amari which leads to the entrance of the port. The port of Palermo is one of the most important ports for passenger traffic in the Mediterranean and is ideal for arriving in Sicily by car ferry.

Historic Palermo, the capital of Sicily, is a busy port and thriving city. Palermo possesses an exciting mix of cultures shaped by its history of occupation whether Arabic or East Germanic.

The port is a medium sized port and is generally moderately busy but is busiest in the summer.

Ferries to Palermo are normally available throughout the year but there are fewer sailings in the winter.

You can travel to or from Palermo with your vehicle or on foot. And normally you can take a bike with you or a pet.

Click Book Now and use the booking form to get the latest prices and see the real sailing dates for all ferries on to or from Palermo.

Why visit Palermo?

  • Visit the Palermo Cathedral with influences from Roman, Norman, Greek, Arabic, Gothic, Sicilian Baroque and Catalan architecture.
  • Appreciate the tomb of Frederick II, who is considered one of the greatest emperors of the Middle Ages.
  • Explore the Royal Palace, the Palazzo dei Normanni. There was a time when this location was the home of the Kings that led Palermo.
  • Palermo has the best street food in Europe and the fifth in the world and you can taste it in the street markets.
  • Go biking through the old alleys in Old Town or the seaside of Mondello. There are many itineraries you can follow.
  • Palermo’s Museo Archeologico Regionale is 10 minutes’ walk from the terminal and the celebrated Vucciria market.
  • Mondello Beach is an easy 25-minute bus ride from the city and it is stunning.

Island hopping around  Palermo

There are plenty of easy transport options for getting around Sicily. Most day trips from Palermo can be done by bus, tourist shuttle or train. Then there are a few places a bit further away from Palermo when hiring your car will be the best option.

The rail network in Sicily is great, and the train station in Palermo is only a short walk from the historic centre. I always found the trains to be very clean and on time. The main rail line runs from Palermo to Messina and then south to Catania.

Palermo port facilities

The port offers a basic level of facilities. It is set in the heart of the town, meaning you are never more than five minutes walk away from a cafe or restaurant.

Getting to and from the port

By car

If you travel by car you should consider that parking in Palermo could be complicated, especially in the downtown areas. Furthermore driving in Sicily is a bit like the wild west, there seem to be no rules, just go for it and try not to crash! And, always assume people will pull out in front of you.

By Bus

The AMAT lines cover all city areas and beyond. However, they may not always be on time. For extra-urban travel, you can instead rely on the AST and reach Monreale, the neighboring villages or other places in Sicily.

By Train

The main train station in Palermo is known as Stazione Centrale and is located in the Old Town District in Giulio Cesare Square. The trains connect this hub to every other major Italian city, as well as other main Sicilian cities.

By Taxi

You will find plenty of taxis outside the terminal and at ranks around the city (cabs are hard to hail on the street). Taxis are very expensive and traffic can make the ride slow. Only use official, white, licensed taxis and check the meter is reset.

On Foot

You can so easily walk to the historic centre. Everything in the historic centre is easily reached from the port on foot as the city is flat. There's also a free shuttle service in the port.
